Blame the Beatles!

Hey Friend,

Have a band member that hates Playback? Tell them to blame the Beatles!

"It was this decision by the Beatles to stop performing that ended up transforming pop music the next year, in 1967..rested and resolved, the band gathered at EMI Studios in London to record a new type of pop album. Without the need to perform their songs in arenas and theaters, they were free to experiment.

Cal Newport, In his book Slow Productivity, quoting New York Times music critic Jon Pareles continues,

"the Beatles insisted on sonic abstractions, dropping the realistic illusions of most studio recording and distorting and manipulating sounds in ways that would be all but impossible to reproduce on stage."

The Beatles, viewed as a band not afraid to experiment and implement new technology viewed the tech in the studio as their paintbrush and their album as a canvas with infinite possibilities.

Newport adds,

"The freedom of pop music from the constraints of performability, however, soon proved a double-edged sword...More bands retreated into studios to tinker with knobs and electronics in an attempt to find new experimental styles."

So maybe, just maybe... it was those experimental sessions in 1967 that led us to create music free from "the constraints of performability" that led to the proliferation of playback in live performance.

Anyways.. I blame the Beatles.

Quick Announcement and Favor

At the end of this week, I'll be announcing a free series of live trainings next week, and our final Bootcamp of this year. Before I do, it would be really helpful to know these two questions...

Worth the Watch/Listen

Here's an example of a "real" band, not using tracks.

Here's Rick Beato's thoughts on if using Playback is "cheating".

“And what if we make a click track so that it changes tempo before it happens on the page.”
