Should you use an Audio Interface or Mixer?

BackStage Pass: 017

It’s confusing! You can buy mixers that record and interfaces that create mixes.

So... What should you buy?

Before we get to today's article, I want to let you know that I'm closing down lifetime access to the site in a few days. It goes away forever, at this price, and with these bonuses. So here's your last chance to get access to the site, and only have to pay once.

The easiest way to know whether you need an audio interface or a mixer is to start with your use case. What are you trying to accomplish? What’s the primary goal? It's also important to understand the primary intended purpose of each.

To make it simple, here's five simple questions you can ask yourself to narrow down the choice.

Studio or Stage?

If you're primarily using it in the studio, choose a mixer. Looking for something to use primarily on stage? Choose an Interface.

Are you using it to record?

Is your primary goal to record? Choose an interface.

Are you using it to mix audio live?

Is your primary goal to mix for a live venue? Choose a mixer.

Are you using it to mix in-ears?

Is your primary goal to mix in-ears for live use? Choose a mixer.

Is it just you?

Are you a solo or live looping artist? Here's where my suggestions change. Consider an interface. But...get an interface that allows you to create zero-latency mixes, and add effects, without using Ableton Live.

Want to learn the intended purpose of each, and 5 more additional questions that will help you decide?

Friday Motivation

Success is not a status or a thing. Too often we think of success as something to achieve. We talk about how successful that person is, or that they're a "successful musician"...but what does that actually mean?

Success isn't status...it's a state. To be "successful" you have to define your aim, what you want to achieve. If you achieve it..you're successful. If not, you "failed to succeed"...not in life...but in that particular goal.

Stop letting other people define your success. Define what goal/purpose you're working towards and go achieve it.

What purpose do you seek to achieve?

How will you get there?

Go do the work..
