Reader,

Often I'll get questions like, “Hey, what’s the best MIDI controller for running tracks?” Or, “Hey, what audio interface is the best for running tracks?”

Frankly, I think this is the wrong question to be asking.

Instead we should be asking… “Hey, knowing what you know about my budget, current setup and constraints, and future goals, what’s the best solution for my particular context?

That’s my goal with today’s tutorial… Considering your budget, your constraints, your current situation, and your future goals…

What’s the best setlist management solution….

For you?

What are Setlist Management Solutions?

If you’ve never heard of Set List Management Plugins and solutions, there are some fantastic ones out there, like Setlist by Strange Electronic, Oaktone’s TAZ Plugins, AbleSet, and the LioBox from GooRoo Controllers.

Those are the four solutions mentioned in today’s tutorial.

As opposed to simply saying, “This is the best solution,” and only basing that decision on my own experience and preferences, my goal is to try to share some simple questions you can ask yourself, and the answers to those questions will lead you to the best solution based on your current circumstance, budget, and needs.

For example, here are a couple of questions to get you started.

What’s the Industry Standard

If you’re looking for the industry standard, it’s by far Set List by Strange Electronic.

Remember, the industry standard doesn’t mean best (although everyone that uses Setlist loves it) it simply means it’s the one that the industry-at large, has chosen to use.

So if you hope to be a playback tech in LA or Nashville, work with a major artist, or sub in for someone currently doing playback on the road, they’re likely going to be using Set List, and that’s what you need to learn to use as well.

What’s the best for collaboration?

If you’re looking for a solution to control from your iPad and have collaborative features where multiple band members can have access to your Ableton set, AbleSet is the best solution for you.

Control From Your Feet??

If you’re looking for a solution that you can control with your feet and easily see your Set list from your foot controller, choose TAZ Lite or TAZ Pro and select the Oakboard Floor Vista.

It’s a well designed solution for guitar players (or anyone looking for control from their feet).
